Detection of synaptophysin by immunohistochemistry (IHC) with Synaptophysin (MRQ-40) Rabbit Monoclonal Antibody may be used to aid in the diagnosis of neuroendocrine neoplasms.
Synaptophysin is an integral membrane protein of the presynaptic vesicles of neurons. Synaptophysin expression is seen normally in neurons, the adrenal medulla, and neuroendocrine cells which are found in the pancreas (islet cells), gastrointestinal tract, pituitary gland, and other sites.1,2 Synaptophysin expression is also found in neuroendocrine neoplasms including small cell carcinomas, large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas, and neuroendocrine tumors such as pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors and carcinoid tumors.2-6 Synaptophysin shows a cytoplasmic pattern of staining.
